On space voyages, his artist's eye and talent enabled him to document impressions of the moon and space to be preserved later on canvas. He retired from NASA in 1981. He says about his work; "I am fortunate enought to have seen the sights no other artist ever has and hope to communicate these experiences through my art." About this piece: Jim Irwin, Colonel, United States Air Force, had a brilliant but challenging career. His is a story of difficult challenges met, and with hard work and perserverance, overcome. After battling illness and severe injuries for ten years, Jim Irwin found himself standing on the Moon. After leaving NASA,Jim authored a number of books about his life and about his experiences.He gave me(Alan Bean) one of those books as a gift and I treasure it today.
